Headcannon is a Los Angeles-based game developer founded by Simon Thomley (also known by his alias Stealth). Headcannon specializes in creating retro style games and faithful revivals of existing IP.[1] The company has created its own engine called Headcannon Game Engine which allows for multiplatform 2D game development.[2]
The company is most widely known for collaborating with Christian Whitehead on Sonic Mania and the mobile ports of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
History[]
Prior to creating Headcannon, Simon "Stealth" Thomley created various video game projects as a hobby.
In 2009, Christian "Taxman" Whitehead approached Thomley seeking aid for a pitch demo of what became the 2011 re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog CD. After the release of Sonic CD, Whitehead was able to bring Thomley on board as co-developer on his next project. In preparation, Thomley registered the name "Headcannon" in November 2012.[3] In 2013, the mobile re-releases of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 became the first titles to be developed under the Headcannon name.
On July 22, 2016, Sonic Mania was announced to be in development by Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games.[4]
