Headcannon is a Los Angeles-based game developer founded by Simon Thomley (also known by his alias Stealth). Headcannon specializes in creating retro style games and faithful revivals of existing IP. The company has created its own engine called Headcannon Game Engine which allows for multiplatform 2D game development.
Prior to creating Headcannon, Simon "Stealth" Thomley created various video game projects as a hobby.
In 2009, Christian "Taxman" Whitehead approached Thomley seeking aid for a pitch demo of what became the 2011 re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog CD. After the release of Sonic CD, Whitehead was able to bring Thomley on board as co-developer on his next project. In preparation, Thomley registered the name "Headcannon" in November 2012. In 2013, the mobile re-releases of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 became the first titles to be developed under the Headcannon name.
